1.Remember, even the hardest gemstone variety can be vulnerable to breakage if it has inclusions that weaken the crystal structure. Exercise common sense: if you have a ring set with a softer gem variety or an included stone, take it off before strenuous exercise. Even the hardest gem of them all, diamond, can shatter in two with a single well-placed blow. Never remove rings by pulling on the stone: that habit may result in a loose, then lost, gem.

2.Most importantly, store each piece of gemstone jewelry separately so that harder stones don’t scratch softer ones. Almost every gemstone is much harder than the metal it is set in. Gems can scratch the finish on your gold, silver or platinum if you throw your jewelry in a heap in a drawer or jewelry box.

3.Rings in particular tend to collect dust and soap behind the gem, particularly if you wear them all the time. You need to clean them regularly to let the light in so your gems can shine. To clean transparent crystalline gemstones, simply soak them in water with a touch of gentle dish soap. Use a bowl of water rather than the sink to eliminate the risk of anything going down the drain. If necessary, use a soft toothbrush to scrub behind the stone. Rinse the soap off and pat dry with a lint-free cloth (you want to make sure threads won’t catch on the prongs) For diamond, ruby or sapphire, a touch of ammonia in the rinse water won’t hurt a bit and can add extra sparkle (for platinum and gold only, not silver!). Think twice before putting gems in an ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds and rubies and sapphires will be fine but many other gems many not be, in particular emerald, opal, pearls, peridot: when in doubt, leave it out.

4.Organic gems like pearls, coral, and amber should only be wiped clean with moist cloth. Due to their organic nature, these gems are both soft and porous. Be careful about chemicals in hairspray, cosmetics, or perfume: they can, over time, damage pearls in particular. Opals also require special care. Never use an ultrasonic, never use ammonia, and avoid heat and strong light.

5.Opaque gemstones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite, require special care because they are rocks, not crystals of a single mineral like transparent gems. There gem materials should just be wiped clean gently with a moist cloth. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb chemicals, even soap, and they may build up inside the stone and discolor it. Never use and ultrasonic cleaner and never use ammonia or any chemical solution. A little care and common sense can add life, luster and longevity to your precious jewelry and gems. After 70 years audio books are still going strong. Nowadays it is very easy to download audio books from the Internet, which makes them more popular then ever before.

A short history of the audio book

In 1920 the Royal National Institute for the Blind in England was already doing research on how to create audio books for the blind. At that time there were a lot of ex World War 1 soldiers who had gone blind as a result of the fighting. In 1926 the RNIB started to use LPs to record audio books which could be played on record players (the kind with the big horn, you had to swing a handle a couple of times before it would play).

In 1936 the Talking Book Service was launched. The first two books were: The murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie and Joseph Conrads Thyphoon. The records used at the time could hold 25 minutes of spoken text, so they needed about 10 records for an average audio book.

In 1940 the studio used by the RNIB was bombed, and one month later a replacement studio was bombed as well. The RNIB wanted to start publishing audio books again, but they needed certain materials which had been destroyed.

In America, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), had started producing audio books as well, and they did send the much needed parts to help their English counterparts. Unfortunately the shipment got lost during a bombing raid of the London harbor! A second shipment however did make it, and the RNIB was able to start again with the production of audio books.

In the sixties the audio books started to appear on cassettes, and later, after the invention of the compact disk player, on CDs.

Nowadays the audio books have become more are popular then ever before, in spite of their age. One of the main reasons for their ever growing popularity is the fact that audio books can be downloaded straight from the Internet. A suitcase often represents all that is frustrating about travel—the packing and unpacking, the small overhead compartments. Having good luggage doesn't solve all these problems, but it eliminates some of the stress along the way.

• Roll with it. There's a reason why you see flight crews with rolling bags: They're extremely easy to handle. Look for pieces with steel-axis wheels, which provide good maneuverability. The retractable handle should extend to a comfortable height and be made from durable aluminum, not flimsy plastic. If you want to carry it on, make sure the bag is no longer than 22 inches, the maximum size limit for most flights.

• Judge its cover. A sturdy exterior adds years to the life of luggage. Lightweight leather is always good, but it can be pricey. I've found that ballistic nylon, a heavier weave than basic nylon, is practically indestructible and less expensive. Yet minor scuffs and scratches are inevitable with any surface, so avoid light colors.

• Inspect it closely. Don't overlook important details: Coiled plastic zippers are less likely to snap than metal ones; expanding compartments allow extra packing space; and straps hold small bags on the expanded handle.

• Store it well. Oil leather exteriors every six months, wipe nylon in and out with disinfectant towelettes, and tuck a sachet inside. Once you find great luggage, you'll want it to stay that way for as long as possible.

Dress for success

If you're planning a day of shopping, ensure that you are wearing comfortable shoes and clothing. If you are planning on shoe shopping, don't wear closed shoes as it will be more difficult for you to try on other shoes. The same applies to clothing; try to choose an outfit that will allow you to get in and out of it with ease, especially if you're the type of girl who likes to try everything on.

Choose the right shopping

buddyIf your boyfriend hates shopping (as most of them do), leave him at home and instead, take a friend who is keen. The last thing you want is someone rushing you because they are bored and irritated. If all else fails, a shopping spree with yourself alone can be just as much fun, plus you get to decide when to stay and when to go.

This rule does not apply if you are shopping for fun. However, if you are looking for something specific, don't go around the store looking at every other item. Go straight to the section that keeps the item you are looking for and if they don't have it, move on and make your way to the next store. Don't spend hours looking at everything; rather leave that for one of those days when you need a bit of retail therapy.

Don't let temptation get the better of you

Stores and merchandisers are experts at tempting you into buying something you absolutely don't need. Don't let this happen, and stick to buying what you've intended initially.

Try the whole thing on

If you are looking to team a snazzy new top with a pair of black pants or jeans, instead of just trying on the top (in your baggy pants), rather take the top, a pair of black pants and jeans into the change room and get a better idea of the full picture. You may find that the top doesn't go with either one of the items and could just end up being a waste of money.

Beware the bargain bin

The bargain bin is another trick that merchandisers have created to help get rid of their unwanted stock. They often mark these items down so cheaply that you just can't resist. And, while we love a good bargain, don't buy it just for the sake of buying it. Ensure that it is something you want, something you'll wear and more importantly, try it on before you buy as sale items are often times non-returnable.

If you're having any doubts, take a walk around the shopping center and give yourself time to think about it. If you really want the item, go back and buy it.

Play it safe

or not you love your new purchase, it's always a safe idea to ask the sales assistant about their returns policy. If the store does not offer a refund policy or does not accept returns, take another look at your purchase and be 110% sure.

How To Collect Photography

Photography has been around for almost two centuries, but only recently has it been considered a fine art. Photographs are less expensive than paintings—the record price for one is $2 million, compared to over $100 million for a canvas—but that differential is rapidly shrinking, so now is a good time to get started.
• Expose yourself. Take the time to visit museums, galleries, and auction houses. Photograph magazine lists all of the American galleries, and the better ones usually take out full-page ads. Gallery owners often have the time, knowledge, and inclination to talk to a potential client. (You're not likely to get that kind of personal attention at an auction house or art fair.)
• Ask the right questions. If you're interested in a photographer's work, ask about print runs, books published, and which museums own the artist's work. In the not so distant past—the 1970s—traditional photographers might do large or even unlimited editions. Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ansel Adams sold thousands of prints of their best-known images, but because of the quality of their work, it never saturated the market. Art photographers such as Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, and other contemporary photographers, typically sell work in much smaller editions.
• Trust your instincts Allow yourself to discover what really appeals to you. Whenever we do a show, the crowd favorite is usually the best photograph. Don't be afraid to be adventurous. Beginning collectors often fall into the trap of assembling a greatest-hits collection—acquiring only iconic images. Look for photography in which the artist somehow furthered the medium. Some young photographers to watch are Idris Khan, Beate Gutschow, Tanyth Berkeley, and An-My Le.
• Pick a genre. As you build a collection, stick to a broad theme rather than a specific one or none at all. Fashion photography, for example, is definitely a booming area, but don't limit yourself to shots of models on beaches. Building up a range of fashion photographs from the midtwentieth century to the present might be smarter. Works from countries outside of America and Europe are also worth exploring, as are contemporary color pictures. There used to be a prejudice against color photography, but now it's as hot as black-and-white.

How to dress between seasons

Spring can stymie even the most fashionable woman—one minute the sun is shining; the next it's chilly and raining. But with a few simple pieces and a big umbrella, it's easy to look stylish in the face of unpredictable weather.

• Dress the part. Keep in mind that your outfit should evoke the season you're going into. Start by banishing chunky black boots, heavy, dark hosiery, and bulky turtlenecks in favor of the dresses that are arriving in stores for spring and summer. You can wear them now with tan or brown boots, balanced with a blazer or a sweater on top.

• Layer away. A tank top, sweater, and jacket is great; three T-shirts on top of one another is not. Make sure at least one of your layers is structured, whether it's a blazer or knee-length coat. And while it's OK to wear pieces in the same color family, keep them neutral and be careful not to overdo it; you'll look like an apple in green on green on green. I also like to mix fabrics. Cashmere looks great next to silk or cotton. The contrast is quite elegant and keeps your various layers from looking sloppy.

• Show some leg. If it's not raining, don't wear stockings or socks—bare legs look great in flats. Ballet flats are wonderful, but they should have a true heel and sole; you don't want to look like you're wearing slippers. Rain boots are ideal in bad weather, but when you get inside, switch to real shoes.

• Upgrade your cover Ditch your winter coat for a safari-style jacket or a trench that is cinched at the waist. I also like the '60s-style A-line coats that designers are doing right now. They look mod over little dresses or trim pants.

• Take shelter. I love umbrellas! If it's going to rain I'll carry a well-made umbrella in a rich color or vibrant stripe. I just hook the handle over my arm. And I adore those see-through umbrellas—very Courrèges.

Jewelry is one thing that woman like to wear for making her looks beautiful and charming. Many people have a belief that the pieces of jewelry they wear have special powers, making them feel better in more ways than one. Given these facts, it is now common practice to wear jewelry for healing.

Going back the past, people back then believed that some gemstones have specific powers that can aid them throughout their lives.

For instance, the most popular gemstone of all, the diamond was believed to dispel madness and poison, and also witchcraft.

The ruby was also believed to ward off stress and evil thoughts, while the opal was helpful when it came to internal diseases.

Besides the power for healing, There was a common belief that some of jewelry used to test poison. In history of China, the chinese people used silver to test poison in food. A ruby turns cloudy and opal turns pale when they are near such a substances too.

Using these gemstones to create pieces of jewelry for healing is still practiced today. Depending on culture, some people still think that they posses these powers. But, considering that every fairytale starts from a truth, they may have a point.
